Chris Stirling Memorial Award

Origin

The Chris Stirling Memorial Award was conceived in 2003 by the Parent volunteers employed in the CHS Uniform Shop. Chris was a parent who was actively involved with Chatswood High School from 1996 to 2003, when she died after a short terminal illness.

In memory of Chris, the CHS P&C Association established an Educational Scholarship, funded from the Uniform Shop profits, to be awarded annually to a selected student.

Candidature

Candidature for the Award is merit-based including the following criteria:

  1. a current CHS student advancing from Year 10 into Year 11 at CHS who has dealt with an adversity or challenge that may affect their schoolwork.
  2. the student may be from mainstream, the support unit or selective stream.

Selection

The CHS Year 10 Adviser in consultation with the School Welfare Committee will select the Awardee from the applicant Candidates. Any staff member can nominate a student.

Administration

An account has been established within the school office that can be accessed by the Award recipient student for educational needs up to the Award value. This may include such things as purchase of books, subject fees, and payment for excursions or private tutoring. Receipts may be necessary for expenses incurred outside school.

The P&C Association will budget an amount annually and remit that amount to the School for disbursement as provided by this policy. The value of the Award was last reviewed in 2011 and set at $300. The P&C Association will consult with the CHS Principal at suitable intervals to review the Award’s administration including the amount to be provided.

Presentation

The CHS Principal will notify the selected Student of his or her selection. The advice letter will include details of the Award’s origin, the dollar value of the award, the time and arrangements for the associated formal presentation and any public announcement.

Mrs Chris Stirling was a parent who was actively involved with Chatswood High School from 1996 to 2003, when she died after a short terminal illness. Chris joined the CHS community as a new parent in 1996 and was interested in supporting the School in whatever way she could. For the next six years she was an active member of the P&C Association and the School Publicity Committee. She also accepted the job of Uniform Shop Coordinator and used this role as an opportunity to both welcome and encourage new families to participate in the school community. Chris was elected to the P&C Association Executive (formerly styled as the School Council) and in 2000 held the position of President. Chris loved helping people, especially children, and was a volunteer scribe in the School Certificate and HSC for children with literacy difficulties. She also worked in the canteen and was employed by CHS in the Food Technology area. In 2001, the year her son Morgan completed the HSC, Chris and husband Kim were awarded lifetime membership of the P&C Association in acknowledgment of their outstanding contributions to the school.

In memory of Chris, the P&C Association has established an Educational Scholarship which will be funded by the Uniform Shop and awarded each year at Presentation day. The School and its P&C Association are delighted to announce this year’s Award Recipient as ……
